Math, lol.
I recommend playing the big maps... on conquest.
That way you don't die every 20 seconds and you get some time to run around and get used to the weapons and maps... and someone isn't sticking a gun in your face all the time.
.. but that's just my advice.
Nope. Only way new players will get better is by a lot of gun fights. Stick to small maps like Metro, Seine, Bazaar, and all of the close quarters maps. New players will notice much faster improvement this way, though coming from CoD to BF3 will still take many hours to learn since Battlefield has a high learning curve.
The best advice I can give is to slow down your movements and use obstacles for cover when firing. This will feel like camping, but until you get a hang of the gunplay, you will lose most gunfights unless you get the jump on them.
As far as gunplay goes, learn to control recoil for sustained bursts. Tap firing does not work on any gun that is not the AS VAL or a semi-auto sniper rifle, and holding down the trigger for full auto sends bullets everywhere EXCEPT where you are aiming (unless you are laying on the ground using a bipod). The trick is to work on pulling down with the mouse to keep the sights steady for sustained bursts of about 5-12 bullets depending on the recoil and spread of the weapon. Generally, the closer to the target you are, the more you can unload using full auto. Go into an empty server and find a wall to shoot so that you can see what the bullet spread looks like after you fire your weapon. Use assault class with heavy barrel + foregrip attachments for maximum accuracy. Low rate of fire guns will be more accurate at longer ranges and easier to control recoil. Higher rpm weapons will excel at close range but have a more violent recoil.
Also, go watch what good players do on Youtube and try to imitate them.
This channel is full of tips that any new player can learn from.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x83w0lUAuO4Note: What he said about not using the foregrip is based on conventional wisdom that is now considered outdated and wrong. Heavy Barrel + foregrip is the most accurate setup for assault rifles and carbines (see symthic for weapon charts and graphs).
The assault class is overpowered in BF3 and is by far the most versatile and widely used class. Here are the weapons to try:
AK-74M (low rate of fire but easier to control recoil and good at medium to long range)
M416 (faster rate of fire than AK-74 and a little bit more recoil, good at medium to long range)
M16A3 (faster rate of fire then M416 and slightly more recoil, by far the most used gun as it is good at all ranges)
AEK-971 (faster rate of fire than M16A3 and violent recoil, one of the best guns in the game for players who are skilled at recoil control)
For vehicle heavy maps engineering class is dominant. The best guns are M4A1 (shown in video above, it is identical to assault class M16A3). Also, the ACW-R is pretty good. You can search for videos about what the different attachments do, but again I recommend heavy barrel + foregrip.
