D2 is the old style game, where people believed there is something good about farming something for 500h hours, doing 10 000 Kurast runs etc. Its a game from old era, not made for fun, but rather for "challenge". D4 is simply trying to be fun.
Fall of D2 style of games has same reason why RTS fell off while DotA rose. People nowadays dont want to play games that require 500+ hours investment into getting basics mechanics, before you can even really start playing. DotA games are somewhat strategic, while very easy to get into, with some skill ceiling. Starcraft 2 compared to that is impossible to understand without first investing 500h or already having 10+ years of other RTS games.
I played D2 for 10 years and today I regret every moment of it. Endless loop of loading screen > teleport search for next level > 5 sec boss fight. You spend 99% your time on loading screen or trading, but actual playing the game is less than 1%.
Bought D2r WL dlc just for D4 skins but never played it

IMHO only 2 types of people find D2 or PoE or so attractive:
A ) People who use it as University simulation.
People like this enjoy having to study for 10+ hours to master crafting mechanics or something. And then feel good about themselves that they managed to master it while others dont (again, none of it is about actual fun). I personally did my real university degree in biochemistry, and I dont want things like this in game. Useless waste of time and mastering it only makes me hate myself for wasting time, I never have fun.
B ) People who use it as Wall Street simulation.
For them, new season is like researching market, investing into right build and then executing it flawlessly to make a lot of money beating everyone else. I have much more understanding of this, but I would still never play D2 or PoE just for this reason. You get a little of this in D4 and thats enough.
Also, as someone who spend a lot of my life also playing tabletop RPGs such as DnD I can tell you that there are many things, such as character immersion, story telling, atmosphere and so, that are very important to many players. And D4 is far superior to any other similar game in these areas. You look at PoE 2 cinematics and they are of worse quality than D3 had. D4 is literally 20-25 years ahead of its "competitors" in these areas.
There are of course many players that just dont care about story (you only play campaign once or so, right?), character immersion (imagine playing caster witch in PoE but looking like medieval knight with helm and mace and shield), but there are many who care.
