Genuine question.

If you prefer D4, please tell me why because I cant find a single reason to play it over D2.

Cross compatible.

Well if thats your only reason then thats a weak one.

If a pile of crap is cross compatible, its still crap.

I login after they do updates, observe what changed (usually it's all garbage as d4 itself), and log out, hehe.

But that's probably don't fit your definition of "prefer d4".

People play d4 because it’s casual friendly, hardly any grinding or time consuming to get gears( not really ideal for arpg but it suits d4 players base)
D4 > d2 in graphics tbh
Other than that, it’s just a game. One does not need a reason to play it. If people wanna throw their 2-3 hours free time into a bad game then let them be

Even the graphics point seems at least debatable.
Yeah, its "better" in terms of more modern, technically more advanced, but - in my personal opinion - loses brutally on the style scale.

For me D2 looks a lot more...appealing (for the lack of a better word).

D2 is the old style game, where people believed there is something good about farming something for 500h hours, doing 10 000 Kurast runs etc. Its a game from old era, not made for fun, but rather for "challenge". D4 is simply trying to be fun.

Fall of D2 style of games has same reason why RTS fell off while DotA rose. People nowadays dont want to play games that require 500+ hours investment into getting basics mechanics, before you can even really start playing. DotA games are somewhat strategic, while very easy to get into, with some skill ceiling. Starcraft 2 compared to that is impossible to understand without first investing 500h or already having 10+ years of other RTS games.

I played D2 for 10 years and today I regret every moment of it. Endless loop of loading screen > teleport search for next level > 5 sec boss fight. You spend 99% your time on loading screen or trading, but actual playing the game is less than 1%.
Bought D2r WL dlc just for D4 skins but never played it :P

IMHO only 2 types of people find D2 or PoE or so attractive:
A ) People who use it as University simulation.
People like this enjoy having to study for 10+ hours to master crafting mechanics or something. And then feel good about themselves that they managed to master it while others dont (again, none of it is about actual fun). I personally did my real university degree in biochemistry, and I dont want things like this in game. Useless waste of time and mastering it only makes me hate myself for wasting time, I never have fun.
B ) People who use it as Wall Street simulation.
For them, new season is like researching market, investing into right build and then executing it flawlessly to make a lot of money beating everyone else. I have much more understanding of this, but I would still never play D2 or PoE just for this reason. You get a little of this in D4 and thats enough.

Also, as someone who spend a lot of my life also playing tabletop RPGs such as DnD I can tell you that there are many things, such as character immersion, story telling, atmosphere and so, that are very important to many players. And D4 is far superior to any other similar game in these areas. You look at PoE 2 cinematics and they are of worse quality than D3 had. D4 is literally 20-25 years ahead of its "competitors" in these areas.
There are of course many players that just dont care about story (you only play campaign once or so, right?), character immersion (imagine playing caster witch in PoE but looking like medieval knight with helm and mace and shield), but there are many who care.

You know you can glaze d4 without bringing d2 or poe2 into the talk right?

Played d2 for 10 years and regret every moment of it due to repeating gameloop trying to find that 1% drop. And d4 is any different? Oh i forgot their mythics come in like a pack of candies. Sure sounds fun. We’ll see if you spend that 10 years on d4 and call it great.
D4 is superior 20 years ahead of its competitors in cinematics and storytelling. We’re talking about that same campaign everyone skipping? Loh story is awful, call it a diablo game but where diablo’s at?
D4 is great suit for casual gamers who do not want to spend majority of their time grinding. That’s the end of its goods. Other than that, game brings no depth, dev are confused of the game direction.

Yes D4 is very different from D2. In D4 I actually play the game, I can go 1 hour or more without single loading screen, and the whole hour is filled with actual combat killing mobs. D2 on the other hand is 20% char menu or loading screen, 75% teleporting around (never interacting or killing anything), and only 1-5% of game time at most can be actually considered playing game. But when doing like Kurast runs all about opening chests, I would consider 0% of that actually playing the game. You just spend dozens of hours opening chests and collecting stuff so that you could play the game later. But opening chests does not count like playing game IMHO.

(Just to be clear, I dont consider teleporting around to find next level "playing the game". You are skipping all of the game to get to the boss. Whole of D2 is just about skipping things.)

Or are you actually saying that more loading screens and teleporting around would improve D4?

OFC if you prefer endless loading screens and teleporting to actual combat and killing things, you can stay in D2 Im not taking that away from you :)

And BTW nobody is skipping campaign in D4, thats simply not true. Only people who already played it dont do it for season (and ONLY on season), bcs its not effective for leveling. But people actually do play campaign, listen to dialogs and watch cutscenes and cinematics, which is not true in any other ARPG on the market. I dont know anyone, player or streamer, who actually listened to story and dialogs in PoE2 even on first playthrough. But everyone does in D4, and many do multiple times.
