I would say your reference to D2 doesn't really work here - you will find out it when you start playing, because of ingame system called "smart loot".

Basically, just play the game and in short amount of time you will be packed with good items for your class, because system "tunes" drops exactly for your character, based on different factors.

Save a little money and a lot of time unless you really want to just explore D4. Each season you play for a week get full bis and its over. Story line was awful / no real good cinematics creation team for blizz or whoever runs this now has gone way down hill. Just a money grabber for their company living off an old games identity. They have no end game.. on D2 I could farm forever and it felt more accomplished then this game seeing tons of items but all useless.

I am a sucker and always buy Diablo games, but do what ya feel.
