does butcher explode upon death?

I was in a T7 horde and i killed the butcher who was the last monster in that wave.

The selection statues appeared and i was looking at them but suddenly i hear an explosion and my toon died 1 shot.

Not that I am aware of. Usually when the selection is there, you should be save...I thought...

He has a really nasty fire everywhere he walks that can just about one shot me and has, but I was on softcore. It persists after he dies and sticks around quite a long time. May be a random proc as I don't notice it every time.
