Is it better to run the typical 2-handed sword?

Or better to run 1 handed sword/wand and a shield?

Trying to be more survivable but also do enough damage to progress.

1 handed + shield is best for survivability. I only like 2-handed builds for uber Lilith.

Now strictly SHIELD or a focus? And does it matter the weapon? I assume the higher DPS like a sword.

Def keep a shield around in inventory with defense rolls for tight spots. I'd aim for lucky %ctc resource, Dr, lucky %ctc slow, all stats or int, close Dr, +life, essence cost reduction, lucky hit%. Add some sort of defensive aspect like basic skills Grant 20 Dr for 2-6 sec or shielding storm. A focus usually should be used for mob clearing and have roughly the same rolls. I like to use crit grants increased attack speed aspect on the focus. Some other suggestions are edge master or standing still increases damage.
