no game will ever be released again that feels good for tryhards, might as well copy/paste complaints to every AARPG and MMO that get released moving forward.
they dont make em like they used to, and people grow up. half the reason it doesnt feel as fulfilling is 30+ year olds realize they wasted 30 hours in a week and all they found was 2 new pieces of gear. if you're 14 years old that's fine, if you're 30 you just traded hundreds of dollars of time for nothing.
if i was 14 grinding out all my lilith alters wouldnt even bother me, now its time i could make money or spend with my kids. so im happy to spend 1-2 hours and nothing more. and i am who AAA companies make games for, not no lifers. being a single bored adult wont get tears from me, go swipe on tinder if d4 is boring.
i'd argue brevik and them couldn't give a shit about what kind of playerbase would play their game. it should be irrelevant from a game developer's standpoint. only factors that were relevant were good game design and replayability, which they did with d2. the end-user (outside of them doing The Mom Test, to make sure the UI is ok), shouldn't matter.
a good game is like matching with someone you really like on a dating app, if the woman likes you, they will find time out of their life to talk to you. same is for games. if the game is good, the player regardless if they have kids or on their deathbed, will find time to play it. that's a good thing.
if these AAA companies start catering to a specific type of playerbase, it's extremely detrimental. if they cater to the game qualities itself, not a target audience, it opens up the door for the younger generation (like how we were when we played d2 for the first time). it's a win win.
