They were still over 3million monthly. D2 NEVER reached that after a year of existence. Neither did D2R.
That's like comparing how many people flew every year in 1960 vs 2024. Gaming was a miniscule marketing during d2 ESPECIALLY pc gaming, and d2r was not released "for the masses".. It's basically retro gaming, a small market.
D4 is the mcdonalds nuggets and fries, way more customers than a ruth's chris.
It's why these games never last but always have "hIgHcOncUrReNtPlAyErBaSe". They sell a shitton, the game is average at best, and numbers adjust.
Blizzard also has a cult-like following (not much thanks to current management or devs imo - living on a legacy) - people will buy the new blizzard game, just like people will buy the new GTA - on name alone, 100 times over.
Lastly, the game doesn't have to be the "best" to have the most. Average stuff often holds highest market share - look at vehicles, appliances, phones etc etc..

You know it’s a bunch of old D2 heads when they’re posting on jsp in 2024 instead of playing the expac. Love y’all.
I’ll join in when the bugs are ironed out and it’s on sale for $15!
Most people probably at work posting from their phone lol
