D4 already died. They made a bunch of money on initial sales. It was just on sale for like $30 on steam, the xpac that just released was also on sale.

POE making 50 million in profits seems pretty sweet for a game that is free to play.

You do know percentage wise of previous playerbase from base game that D4’s first expansion sold better than LoD? I mean they both sold only a fraction of base game sales but D4 Vessel of Hatred absolutely did better from what we know already.

50 million is not that great. D4 did WAY MORE than that in microtransactions year 1 and it is BUY TO PLAY. You’d think a free to play game with no up front cost could beat a b2p game with high up front cost on microtransactions.

Heck even IGN the “Diablo Haters” changed their mind after the recent expansion stating the current game is the best it’s ever been and they famously did a massive smear campaign at launch.

The most logical argument and reason I’ve seen. That’s 100% real.

Like seeing your favorite band play their greatest hit live, Diablo 4 is completely awesome to behold even though you know exactly how the song’s going to go from the moment you hear the first iconic note.

Initial reviews came out ok yes but after March(and VoH release) it’s been nothing but trashing them for over a year about microtransactions, patches and gameplay.

Here are other IGN quotes you neglected:

“ Diablo 4’s Hellish Microtransactions Go From Bad to Worse With $65 Horse Bundle That Costs More Than the Game Itself”

“ The game can feel "empty" with a lack of engaging endgame content beyond repetitive "Nightmare Dungeons," and some classes are considered weak, leading to a less-than-optimal experience for players; additionally, the game has been criticized for bugs and technical issues that can impact gameplay, particularly with character movement abilities like teleporting.”

There are many others of course but you get the point. IGN is a group of people not just one person. The people who have done initial reviews have been more than kind but most of the people writing the articles and social media posts have been negative and whiney.

Personally Im getting less exiceted about PoE2 every day. Was hoping GGG would move to make game mainstream, I never liked PoE 1 bcs of horrible graphics, no story and confusing/clunky/complicated game mechanics even before endgame (I tried game multiple times and never got past lvl 40/Act 4 as there was literally nothign I enjoyed about the game).
So I was hoping they would move mainstream with better graphics, story, cut scenes and cinematics, easier understanding and mechanics (abandonning inventory tetris & light radius and other "realistic" outdated things).

I would not even be asking to have endgame simplier, just to make game more mainstream.
But every day, every new interview its becoming more clear that GGG is aiming on upgraded graphics, but keeping focus solely on endgame with no interested in moving game more to mainstream in any meaningful way.
I basically lost insterest in the game in past couple of days.

So I expect that PoE 2 is not going to disrupt status quo at all. PoE will remain brand favored by competitive community, while Diablo will keep market dominance with far more players willing to pay for Diablo that players even bothered to download PoE for free.

I’ve played some Ea. It’s definitely more accessible than PoE 1 but you are pretty close. Most mainstream and casual players I feel won’t enjoy it. Keep in mind people on d2jsp that “say” they are “casual” are not compared to the average player. This site doesn’t cater to the “casual” it’s for diehard fans, gamers and deviants and in no way, shape or form is a good measurement of judgement when it comes to games.

We know D4 continues to be successful from every quarterly report Blizzard gives on it. Will PoE 2 do some things better? I’m sure. Will it dethrone something that has basically become pop culture? Not anytime soon I think.

All you said is, mostly, true.

But PoE2 did pull some attention away from d4 and it's some kind of a new situation.

Temporarily for sure but so did every other “Diablo Killer”. My major issue with PoE 2 is the boss fights and drop quality. You can spend 10 minutes on a boss fight that has you thinking about every move you make in what feels like a “souls-like experience” At times and get garbage in return. Personally I play these types of games because after a hard day/week at work I can just sit down, veg out and grind using little to no brain power to do so.

My other problem is it’s just not fun. It feels dull with no personality. People can say what they will about the Diablo series but they always have a few characters and quests in there that can make you giggle… Examples:

Diablo - Who doesn’t remember Farnham dialogue? Wirt being a little jerk. The fallen stealing the tavern sign as their “magic banner”? Running from the butcher nearly shitting your pants when you open that door? Garbhad’s wack betrayal after acting like he’s a victim…. That’s a cow alright?

Diablo 2 - Cows with weapons standing on two legs? Moo… moo…moo? A cow king? You can actually hit someone with Wirt’s leg? Many a convo about Andariel’s design (you guys know I’m not explaining). Oops did I do that(one liner)?

Diablo 3 - The dude who kept his wife’s skeleton and her head rolls off onto the floor. More ridiculous cows. Rainbow land. Covitus Shen. Jay Wilson mob(and other dev team mobs). Horadric Hamburger and other funny weapons. (D3 had a shit ton of funny moments more than any of them so I’m not gonna even attempt to list more.)

Diablo 4 - Lorath passed out drunk in a pig sty. Blackmailing the priest after the exorcism. Meshif being somehow still alive and addicted to opium. The blind man quest where he retrieves his “eyes” from demons then explodes after putting them back in. Retrieving stolen goats and camels.

There are tons of other examples of course but ultimately the personality put into the Diablo series is much better than PoE. PoE is a great dark, dreary gothic style game but lacks a lot of personality in my opinion.
