what reason on earth makes you believe I would say d2 sucks if it was released today? seriously can u explain how u would draw that conclusion. you just saying I'm a sucker for nostalgia doesn't really make sense here b/c d2 is a good game and d4 is a bad game. your comment would mean that d2 was equally as bad as d4 which is not the case nor is my opinion.
so how did u come up with your comment? the only reason diablo 4 even comes up on my radar is because how much I loved diablo 2.
the only reason I'm not playing d2r right now is because I've played diablo 2 since I was a teenager and I've beaten it hundreds of times.

Items suck, because its basically D3 vanilla itemization(basically a bad version of D2 itemization - changed with ROS towards WoW singleplayer itemization if you don't remember this.) Bad loot hunt = no replayability. No replayability = mediocre ARPG at best.Its more than this, but this is definitely a huge part of it.

You didn't need to play this game to know this though. Just needed to look at the items to know that it would suck and maybe listen to a few people who played the beta to figure out the rest of the game was pretty mediocre. The gameplay is D3, so its never going to be entertaining for long except for a small group of people who have some niche tastes.

If you're still here and playing this game, trying to figure out "When will this game feel like D2? or a successor to it?" Stop. It won't. Should have learned that from d3. Try to remember this when they inevitably promise all the bullshit fixes for this in the next expansion and don't buy it. They don't know how to make a successor to D2, and D3 is a mediocre game, which this game will try to build on(which is why you're asking these sorts of questions in the first place). Also, its blizzard(Not the old blizzard - the one who actually made good games - we're talking about the blizzard post D3) so they got your money and will do the absolute bare minimum to keep you engaged and buy the next expansion. If you're looking for a massive overhaul of this game into something like D2 do not count on it.
