I mean you don't miss out on them after seasons end, since they don't carry over to Eternal realm.

Your gut feeling is usually correct.
In this case, since most non-casuals (us here on JSP for example) don't buy cosmetics, and read patch notes religiously, we have already payed the price of the game, and us playing it, is just "wasted/unnecessary bandwidth" for them now.
They only want the non-patch notes reading, KFC eating, non-diablo 4 deleting, casual crop.

So your "theory" of purposefully destroying the hype is closer to a fact then just a theory.
