D4’s first season, “Season of the Malignant,” scheduled to start on July 20. However, there are some essential details that players and fans might not be aware of regarding the actual kick start of the event.
Prior to launching the first season, Blizzard will release a seasonal patch on July 18, a couple of days in advance. While it doesn’t signify the onset of the season, it does represent an “early launch” for some critical features before the season officially begins. Players, however, won’t be able to create a seasonal character or dive into the new seasonal storyline or mechanisms at this point.
This patch will also deliver one of the game’s most extensive balance patches since its launch, providing updates on game classes, Aspects and Uniques that are being buffed or nerfed. The actual impact of these modifications will only be apparent once put into practice. Players should anticipate some changes to their builds, and possibly even some nerfs to the most potent ones. However, significant buffs are also expected, giving players the option to try them out if switching builds isn’t much hassle, or perhaps influencing the choice of the seasonal character they intend to use.
The patch also marks the release of the game’s new Legendary Aspects and Uniques. These will start dropping in the eternal realm before the season starts, allowing players to cultivate them using their current characters, potentially altering or refining their present builds. Although, they will have to handle the larger pool of existing Aspects and Uniques. The provision to farm these newbies will be made available two days before the season, and every new season will feature fresh Aspects and Uniques that can drop in both eternal and seasonal realms.
Also, with the patch going live, players will want to log in on their most advanced character for tasks like map fog clearing, Altars of Lilith, and renown. A new system will tag the progress from that character and transfer it to all your alts and also your upcoming seasonal character. This means players can start the new season without starting completely from scratch. It’s indeed feasible to do this after the season launch, but getting a head start can be beneficial.
We can also focus on additional tasks like more fog clearing and Altar wrapping. Completing the campaign is a prerequisite for the season, which will allow your seasonal characters to skip it and start farming Malignant Hearts faster. Importantly, several key components like balance updates and new loot will be live before the season starts, so players can dive in a bit early.
I'll keep this thread updated as usual when more information becomes available.
