the problem is a lot of them just don't care about the genre anymore. they are getting close to retirement, in their 30s busy with being a dad, or just simply don't care and want to just hop on a game to play, etc. a lot them view the game through a lens of time spent:$ ratio, like the infamous "i got my money's worth" which is just weird in and of it self. d2 was $49 and offered far more than 6 days of play time
Not to continue the back and forth. But for the overwhelming number of people that bought and played d2, it probably had the same longevity as most ARPG's have throughout time. Played for a week or two then moved on to something else.
Just because a few of us autistic weirdos took it to a whole other level doesn't mean that every game in the diablo franchise should or even could. I do believe Blizzard will take what they have and continue to make improvements. Just like they did with d3, even if they went in the opposite direction the autistics wanted in that title.
