I've been sort of letting the game find it's "end state" before playing.
Subjective to everyone; but I prefer a fast paced Diablo state. I don't enjoy the game because I like the crawl to level cap, I play the game because brain go brrt when I'm flying through the map and killing mobs. Call me old fashioned, but Gauntlet Legends and the ilk are what sets my bar.
With D2, 1.08 then 1.10 thru 1.14 were when the game was the most "fun" to me. It also brought in enough new concepts and framework repairs to keep me invested.
Diablo 3- I had beta access, then pre-ordered the game only to be super disappointed with its state and economy. RMT AH, and the slow grind to level etc, felt artificially throttled. I left it be for a few years and when I returned to it, I felt it to be the pace that I like it at, quick - rewarding, fun and made the loot farming tolerable while chasing speed and DPS for optimal runs.
Diablo 4 - Pre-Ordered yet again, and genuinely enjoyed the story mode play through, and the initial impressions were all good. Content however got stale real quick and I sort of left it for nearly two years. Tried again after the expansion, and while there was more content - it's still not really "organized". Progression isn't clear and the direction it wants you to take also isn't very intuitive. I imagine by next expansion there'll be a more uniform direction it will go to with.
With Diablo 2 and 3, doesn't matter your experience level or understanding of the game, you can pick it up and get through it in short order and have a blast doing it. D4 feels like it pulls you in too many directions and calls it "options" when really (subjectively) we just want to kill mobs and get loot.
Tl;dr;
Game is alright, a bit confusing and not refined in its direction like D2 or D3 - worth playing, but it's going to change and evolve yet until it settles into it's end state
evolve yet until it settles into it's end state - end state will be like this: they will drop d4 support after couple expansions and reallocate resources to d5, because it just doesn't make money from seasons.
