Yeah I think they said they would really like to do something special with the normal items and the rare items later on but that they really liked simplifying the loot system. TO be honest I love the new uniques with rolling + skills and + dmg and stats that actually make sense to have.
I do hope they come back to rares and whites and do something fun and exciting with them but I get it when a game is in shambles you have to prioritize what you want to upgrade and what you want to fix because obviously limited time.
I'm not defending the devs but I'm not angry with them either.
ALSO at least now when you get a legendary item, it feels better than before when you would get a legendary item. Because before there really was no point in having lego's and rare's because there honestly was zero difference between what you could get with either. So I am glad that there is a distinct difference between the two.
