Took people months to emotionally process what they were sold in D3 was fundamentally a different game than D2(Game they loved/one of the best games ever made) and had almost nothing in common with it in terms of the fundamentals. Especially after waiting so long. People kept hoping if they did X thing in D3 it would start to feel like D2, but never did.

This time though? Plenty of fools bought D4 telling themselves what they wanted to hear and got burned a second time, so learned quicker.

It's wild how much more enjoyable offline single player D2R mods are over D4.

Well, in that case people got enough game to be satisfied. This isn't 2000. People don't need the same game for the next two to ten years. 3 months is plenty.

Frankly lots of people now purchase story games for 30 hours of total gameplay and know that going in.

Obviously this is a shift in demand from what we grew up in and conflicts with our own demands but that's change. Unfortunate, but is what it is.

We can not purchase it in our own form of protest. But no matter how much crying and bashing is done here, the people that got a happy three months of playing win and because that's the vast majority of consumers now days I don't see much change on the horizon. Which makes old gamers on the internet crying essentially the old man telling kids not to skate on the sidewalk.

The problem is that if no repeating is observed with an activity it means that activity is unrewarding.

The fact that a game is only 30 hours long is not why people chose not to repeat it it's because it's a bad game unworthy of repetition.

you're not wrong. i just don't agree with that change and will not accept it. all it does is encourage game devs to continue to produce poo poo games, while screwing over the consumer

No that is not what that means anymore. That is what it meant back in time because there was not a flood of games on the market and so many forms of entertainment.

Today there's an infinite amount more entertainment then there once was in the form of digital consumption eating our time.

You're view is far too narrow and does not encompass the change in consumerism over time. Just like TV. There's a million shows being pumped out drawing your attention every direction and people are satisfied watching a few shows of something and moving on without even watching a full season. Its not because it was bad, there's just so much stuff being pumped out.

Do I think a lot of it is poor in quality, sure, does the majority, I dont think so.

That same person playing D4 probably has Netflix, Disney +, Prime and Crave. They also are probably playing 5 other video games. 30 hours and you are absolutely satisfied because there's 50 other things waiting for your time and I won't even go down the social medial rabbit hole that takes up so many peoples time.

Go back in time and we watched the Simpsons and played 1-2 games. Myself Diablo and WC.

Even the Sultan who was bombarded with 100 women had one woman he preferred and spent all his time with. And if the Sultan preferred none of the 100, they were all fired from the Harem and another 100 women was hired.

Lack of preference, the lack of obsession and passion with something, it has no excuse. Humans are still humans.

And willingly developing a product for it not to rise above others is illogical.

It's not illogical at all. Money is invested into marketing, marketing sells modern games, people backed by studies have an attention span that is decreasing, that attention span lends well to marketing pump and dump and the cycle continues. People are satisfied with the 30 hours they got and move on to the next shiny new object that's sold to them.

Just because you don't like modern consumerism does not mean times haven't changed and it's the new modern beast and people for the most part are happy dividing their time among so many things.

Again, look at Americans, I believe the average amount of streaming subscriptions is nearly 4. For a boomer like me that sounds crazy. I subscribe to one at a time and watch something to completion the move on, but that's not that the average population is doing based on readily available data.

There's zero reason to think that's not the same case with video games.

That's kinda true if you look at how many YouTube feet-up yoga channels I'm subscribed to and watch.

Hmmm...
