Bought the game last night and left it downloading while I slept, unfortunetly I have had to go to work today so not got a chance to play it yet.

I planned on making a BH Merc which I've been set on since I decided to buy it - but even though I try not to be swayed by whining and nay-sayers on the official forums I am concerned about my choice so please put my mind at ease.

How are they in PVE/PVP?

The latter is probably more important.

Almost rank 60 BH Merc here. Done a few hard modes and well overall all damage is really good once you learn how to manage heat properly. AOE damage is awesome and we can do alot of bursts at least with Arsenal spec. Very resilient and hard to kill due to Heavy armor and damage reducement talents and skills.
Max damage i've pulled with this (550 expertise) is ~600k in a bg. Only classes i have a hard time is against a good operative or a good marauder.

Mercenaries are awesome. Just don't be the Tracer spamming queer.

Sentinels, Scoundrels and Vanguards are going to be your major problems in pvp.

In PvE you just need to carefully manage your vent heat, and procs. I don't suggest Arsenal for PVE
