Where you do have a point, I think you are not taking into account the exceptions to the rule and why. I mean just look at WoW. Star Wars is doing the same basic style, adding in story (which is what makes a great RPG. Final Fantasy) developing new and different option for the player and then drawing for their incredibly large fan base. The game will do just fine and be around for quite some time.
And also this. Who seriously believed Rift was going to last for more than a month? When it released I didn't even know what it was, and after playing it for 15 minutes I got bored. Nothing new with it. I also think a lot of people in the MMO genre are bored of the whole fantasy/medieval theme and wants some sci-fi or well maybe not sci-fi in particular, but just something ELSE. But that's just a theory.
When it comes to GW2, I think everyone who played GW will probably go to GW2 together with a bunch of new players. I just don't think it'll revolutionize anything and I don't think it'll come anywhere close to sw:tor when it comes to number of players. I could be wrong.
Then again, every time a new MMO releases people are always saying "this will be the next new thing" or "This is going to be the WoW killer" but there has seriously not been a single threat so far that I can think of. Now there's coming two huge MMOs almost at the same time and both of them with huge fanbases BEFORE release.
For an MMO to succeed it needs a couple of things.
1) Money. Money. And even more money. EA has sponsored BioWare for this game and therefore money hasn't been a problem and never will be.
2) A well known universe we can relate to. Star Wars has this for obvious reasons. So did WoW. Rift is just one of many MMOs who lacked this.
3) A large fanbase BEFORE release. BioWare has this because of their countless of good games throughout the years, and Star Wars has it because... well... it's Star Wars. Once again, Rift didn't have that. WoW did have it. GW2 has it but not in the same size as the Warcraft and Star Wars universe.
4) End-game content. Rift has none worth talking about neither did any other MMO that has released since WoW. Hopefully sw:tor will have it. Only time will tell.
5) A nice flow/feeling in the game play. WoW has that. GW2 looks like it has that. Sw:tor looks like it has that. Rift probably had that as well but since it lacked on all previous points it wasn't enough to save it.
Several other things comes into play obviously such as good marketing and a successful launch etc but still. Sw:tor looks promising on all these fronts (apart from end-game which we simply don't know enough about yet but I remain confident).
Another very important thing is that the game adds something new to the genre and doesn't repeat the same mistakes other MMOs has made. Sw:tor is adding a lot more focus to story which may sound irrelevant to some but I think that when you actually play it, you'll notice how much it adds to the immersion. The whole game is also voice-over including your own character which is something that has never been done before in an MMO.

Guys, will you be creating a JSP guild or the equivalent of in this game? Would be nice to have a group of mates to play with.
I've not looked much in to it apart from a few gameplay youtube clips and those amazing videos, still... 100% keen to play it!
GrimsBlood made one for US players. It's with his IRL friends and a couple from JSP. I suppose if you're American you could ask him.
