about to make my first char, any tips?

I assume you're talking ESO? but since we don't have our own forum, it's hard to tell

A DK or Sorc wearing light armor and a destruction staff will be your bread and butter in veteran zones, but 1-50 you can experiment with the weapon skill lines but know that stamina based abilities are inferior to magicka based abilities and the current meta for all classes is light armor and destruction staves.

Make whatever you want the first time around, but know that you'll have to make another char if you want to be really competitive with it.

yea im talking about ESO, and never played any of the elder scrolls games this is my first one.

Well have fun with the 1st char, don't be afraid to mess it up and just reroll, since it is a fun game.
