I told my friend that I'm saving up for the 42k mount and he said the 17k one is the same in 10 days due to upgrades, when I said the 25% one would be faster with the upgrades he implied that they're still about the same because you can't go above 25% speed or something like that.

Can anyone clear this up for me? I'm talking about the plain 15% speed one and the 25% one. When I get one I'll likely upgrade speed.

Get the speed mount.
Upgrade only apples (speed).

You can still run fast on mount without stamina.
And the "not getting knocked off" thing for stamina in PvP doesn't do anything when people hit you hard.

The 17k mount will NEVER be as good as the 42k ones.
You can only get a certain amount of upgrades on a mount. (I believe 50 total)
The 17k one will always be 10 behind.

Each item you feed a horse, increases it's level. Just like players, max level is 50. Horse can get to level 50 which means you can only feed it 50 times. Horse with 25% starting speed can max at 75% speed. Where as horse with 15% starting speed can only max at 65%.

If you want to have the fastest horse possible, buy the 25% speed horse and feed it 50 apples.
