How did you start? Heres what I did

Thieves guild(Get some levels/money)
Start main quests/Do some side quests still for thieves
Join dark brotherhood
Work on alchemy/smelthing(bettergear)(alch, Money)
Steal from castles(usually expensive stuff)
Take from invisible chest in dawnstart
Get even bettter
More main story
Explore, have fun, Try diffrent things

Main story to half way
random stuff
Thieves guild
random stuff
Rest of the main story
random stuff
Got bored
Started Morrowind

Focused completely on main story while stocking up on as much side and misc quests as possible.
Dark Brotherhood
Thieves
Companions
Bards
Mages college
Do misc quests if I was near them
Finished everything I found, quests, dungeons etc

My character was a tribrid.

Start with the main q since all gear rewards r basically shit anyhow.

well how i started and ended the

did they main quests u have to do in the start
exploring
going where ever i like clearin up dungeons and caves, killing beasts in the open
bought my first house, needed somewhere to put all my stuff insted of using open place
start stealing alot untill i reached 99 when stealing got boring
start smithing soon reached 99 after little time
start train illusion untill i got 99 awsome fast done if u ask me (was mage from start but never used illusion untill i heard u could be invisible xD )
after all that did i start the main story
killed my first dragon
continued the main story not so long in but still main story
after killed some dragons made dragon armor

then i got bored and started to play minecraft....
Skyrim is a great game even though i think ist to simple to me, or just totaly impossible

i am a thief (still working on guild)
i can steal the weopon from your hand durinng combat without you noticing,,,, O.o

best thing to do is play with a bucket, cabage. and telikineesos
