can some one please explain to me how the ranking system works?

Jk on a serious note at your rank and from my experience...I assume the item timings in your bracket are probably non existent, bad lane mechanics from everybody even the enemy team, teamwork is probably not even a factor. No body is dota smart enough to shot call. Everyone probably flames each other and gives up easily.

What it really comes down though is whoever makes the least mistakes wins the game.

I agree I don't take advantage of champions like those and play champs that I more enjoy into ranked (And know I can play them well, at least at my MMR)
I feel like at my current rank teamwork is hard to come by-which goes to what your saying of literally trying to carrying the team with op heroes. The people who talk the most tend to be people that really don't know how to play but try to tell others how to play in a very toxic way.
It's tough finding players to play with that are reliable in terms of teamwork/synergy and don't feed.

I did some more research on how ranking works and realized it's based off MMR but still can't figure out a few things.
So if I click on my "stats" in game that should only show my current MMR for ranked or for normals?
Also is there a way to view my highest MMR rating from the current season?

MMR determines rank, your medal is based off of the average MMR of all players, so you could move up medals without playing if a lot of people lose some MMR, the reason you're not gaining MMR is because you're bad and playing alone, if you were good and playing alone you would gain MMR slowly, if you played with someone around your skill level while being good and playing only pos 1 and pos 2 ( safe lane and mid ) you would win 80% of your matches until you get to the rank you deserve, if you're in EU i'd be happy to play with you and tell you what you're doing wrong, with my friend there aswell.
