doing hdin for the 1st time. i am on singleplayer currently walking through nm. i find it surprisingly difficult. my damage is fine, but very often my hammers don't hit. when i try to reposition him a tiny bit, i often accidentally click an enemy and cast more hammers instead of walking. any recommendations?

Yes, it takes time to adjust to. You have to pick spots to cast hammers that are wide and spacy. And always remember that the hammers spawn at the top left of your character, so that is the immediate damage spot. And of course then turn clockwards. There is no secret that hammerdins are tricky to use in tight spots. But that's the tradeoff. They deal high damage and is unimpeded by about 99% of the monsters in the game. So it takes a while to learn. You also need some good gear in order to tank monsters, since you need to be in close range to be able to deal damage effiiciently, unless you use bait tactics, which works only on melee characters.

ty for your reply. i use holy shield and max block to improve the tankiness you mentioned. i always try to get close to enemies - i found it's best to approach them from below - and then stand still and spam hammers. i was just wondering if there's some kind of special technique to it. because quite often there are single enemies, where it just takes a long time for me to hit them and where i have to reposition constantly, to be able to hit them at all.

and yeah you're definitely right about tight areas. those are especially annoying, because the hammers vanish when they hit walls.

That's the main strategy. There really isn't any other strategy or technique.. hammerdin is mostly beneficial for open-spaced areas, like baalruns or chaos runs. Getting to that point can be a struggle. Which is why i don't think so much of it. It's the rich spoilt tantrum-throwing kid's choice.

Move 1 square between each hammer. i usually cast about 3 squares away from the monster pack and walk one step hammer one step hammer

ty all for your replies. it's much better now. i somehow got used to the mechanics and the spacing between the hammers. additionally, i realized one crucial and dumb mistake i was making. i often clicked very close to the monsters when trying to reposition, which often resulted in casting hammers because i accidently clicked monsters. now i click further away and stop movement for casting with shift+click. this basically allows me to constantly reposition between casting. still, i can see why they introduced force move in d2r.

That's a good technique, i forgot to mention that.. you can use shift + right/left click to cast hammers and thus allow more freedom of movement and spacing. But it ultimately gets down to pinpoint positioning and just selecting the best areas to play .... hammers need a little bit of time to get going to full effect, almost like hydra.
