I find myself at a cross road, I want to have someone that can take down clone on a small budget should I find a walk again.

Smiter with just rw black and you're good, if you can get a life tap wand, you're golden

Agreed, if both are full build, Java is waaaay better, but smiter literally requires almost no gear

I only play hc ladder... You kinda need a smiter anyway if you want to collect organs and do UT. During early ladder reset there's nothing but cheap gear so smiter wins. I always make an ultra cheap smiter (scourge 3 sox / black runeword: scourge better than flail for the durability), 4 sox shield 40+ all res with 4 pdiamond, goblin toe or guillaume's face or both.

Ultra cheap. This ladder I found an early sorc torch 18/20: sold on d2 jsp when they're worth 3 digits fg, as opposed to later on when people drop them in game ; )

As a bonus if I see Dclone spawn, it's easy to kill him.

Once weeks pass by, I enhance the smiter with fancier gear (bought with some of the forum gold the early torches did bring).

setup your melee sorc no problem with dclone

It depend on what you've to do
way better means 2-3 seconds on kill.
if you plan to do 10 Anni per day you'll save half a minute
if you plan to do 500 Anni per day you'll save 20 minutes

before debate, I'm comparing a properly built java with a properly built pvm smiter (nobody do it as the cheap version is mostly ok)
I'm also considering P1 as only turds/casuals would hoard farm dclone in full games
