Welcome Surv! Many people here can answer many questions which you have. If you want, feel free to PM me and I'll help if I can, just because, as always, you'll see some trolls!

However, most are helpful!
To answer your question about the player settings, /p8 gives best experience and item drops per monster, therefore, if you're looking for
items, then /p8 is best. Most people run countess (reruns that is) on /p1 because they are not looking for items, but instead
runes. When you kill Countess, she drops 0-3 runes on p1. This is because less items are dropped, making more room for runes to drop. This is because when max items are dropped by countess, no runes can be dropped. It's kinda like that. Each player setting you go up (1 > 2) the monsters HP goes up 50%, up to 450%.

Monsters' experience value and Hit Points will change with the number of players in the game. When more people join a game, the monsters become harder, and as they leave the game, the monsters become easier. For the ultimate challenge, fight solo against monsters on Hell difficulty in an 8-player game. In multiplayer, when a monster is created, its Hit Points are multiplied by the number of players in the game: (Life = Hit Points * (Number of Players + 1) / 2). The monster's base experience value is determined by the following formula:
Experience = X * (n + 1) / 2
X = base experience
n = # of players in the game
Typing "/players X", where X is a number between the current number of players and the maximum (8), in the message box will set the effective number of players in the game (in single player, open Battle.net and TCP/IP games only).
For MFing at higher levels, p8 settings are best for the best drops. However, some people like to farm on lower settings, such as p3 or p5 because they increase the drop rate from p1, but are much easier to kill than p8. To note: each 2 players that join the game (Players set to 4, etc) will increase drop rate. What that means is player settings 1/2 are the same drop rate, 3/4 are the same, etc.
