I just recently got into this singleplayer holy grail thing. Just finished act3 and the game crashed. It still shows a save file but no character is popping up. Not sure if its fixable or not. Based on forum knowledge, am I SoL already or is it POSSIBLE to get my char working. PM me if you can help out.

Pretty sure that if you played through the entire game up to a3 without ever saving and exiting, then a crash will result in a loss of all saved data up until your last save and exit. Meaning everything, if that is the case for you.

I did backup all of my save files to a USB drive a while back, just in case my 16 year old PC ever decides to finally die. I should really do a fresh backup because it’s been almost a month since the last backup and that would be a LOT of lost progress on Cryogenic, not to mention my other characters and my holy grail.

Backing up your save files is a bit of a grey area though. If you’re playing hardcore, you have to be honorable if you die and just accept it.

(Never died before on a single player hardcore char so I don’t know if it’s actually possible to restore a dead HC character with backup save files, but I would imagine it’s just that simple.)

In short, don’t ever do that, or you’re only cheating yourself. Otherwise, it’s good to have backups in the event of possible non-death related file losses. Although in all my years, I’ve never had a loss that required a backup.
