Hey!

This might be the dumbest question on this forum but with that being said how does Poison Nova work in terms of damage?

It's poison damage over 2 seconds, does that mean I only need to use it every 2 seconds or does spamming it "add up" the damage?

I would think the next "attack" wouldnt count until the 2 seconds is up...

Poison does not stack in the game. So for novamancer, you would use nova every 2 seconds or just before the previous one is finished.

Be aware that its 2 second duration is modified by the PLR of the target (poison length reduction).

Furthermore, PLR is affected by -%EPR and (for players and mercenaries) by difficulty (ie : -100% in hell for LoD games).

when you hit an opponent with a poison attack, it deals 1 frame of poison damage from that attack, then if that damage per frame is higher than the current poison on the target, it overwrites it with the new poison's damage per frame and duration.
since poison nova has a random damage range, each cast may or may not overwrite the previous casts, about 50% chance to overwrite a poison nova the first time, then 75/87.5%/etc
the poison dps isn't added, its just replaced.

as feanur says, -% poison resist (but NOT lower resist) reduces enemies poison length resist in addition to poison damage resist, so reaching -100% poison length makes your poisons last twice as long- same dps. Players have -40/-100% PLR in nm/hell and would need a lot of "% poison length reduced" items to reach the 75% cap, which nobody does, but all monsters have 0% PLR in all difficulties (only ancients can spawn with random rare gear that gives +% PLR). So you can be assured that your poison nova always lasts 2 seconds modified by your -% enemy resist. A fully geared PvM poison necro can hit ~51000 damage over 3.9 seconds
