Over the past couple of weeks I have been reading through some of these walk throughs. They are very entertaining. (Also effective for killing time waiting for a scope at work)

I notice people follow similar progressions, farming certain areas for certain runes, and items.

So my questions are:
1. Is there a set roadmap of places to farm as you level?
Normal - Countess until you make insight
Nm- meph until you find mid level uniques
Hell - countess until runewords
- LK cta, enigma, etc
- meph high level uniques

2. Is there A good compilation of useful runewords based on class or level? / crafting recipes

Thanks for any advice, i may try one, just wanted to see if some information that I’m aware i can google has been compiled.

Good place to find stuff about items or gameplay

http://dropcalc.silospen.com/item.php
Good place to find out who can drop what in each difficulty.

Other things u learn thru experience, read other walk thrus, or asking people

*4 socket polearm/swords is only possible to cube or larzuk from act 5 normal or higher

*original rune words section is the best place to look when starting out. (Stealth, black, steel, Strength, etc..)

Just start up a walk and start killing stuff. You’ll find out the strategies for making things easier pretty quickly. Reading other WTs is quite helpful too.

What works for one might not work for others. Player preference is huge in these WTs. Plus, it’s fun to discover your own style of play and approach. It feels like you’re actually re-discovering the game instead of just slogging through it like at ladder resets and such. Just my 2¢.

This. A lot of people opt for Stealth early on. Malice polearm can be a good early weapon for A2 merc.

Smoke can be really useful if you’re sorely lacking resists later on.

Guess a lot depends on what character/build you’d be making, but yeah Meph and Andy are a good stop for upgrades in NM.

Any ideas what sort of toon you would go for?

https://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Runewords_by_Rank

In here you'll find Runewords By Rank.
Going from the bottom, you will see the easiest runewords, and as you move to the top you'll see stronger and harder to get runewords.
Simply go through them, and when you feel like you're interested in a certain runeword, google each rune in the item and check areas in which they fall.

For example, Normal countess can only drop runes between : El - Ral.
You can find it all on google.

Doing a research and experimenting is a big part of playing, so I'd suggest just starting and finding out things by yourself, with occasional help we can provide you in here as we follow your journey.

Thanks for those insights as well.

I am still pondering on what I will WT on. As I have not done a SP walk through since I was 13, I was thinking of going a bit cookie cutter for the first. Was thinking a P8(Initial Clear) Cold Fire Sorc (Orb / Fireball), perhaps running through normal with charged bolt / lightning, respec to cold in N/M with orb maxing it, then as cold is pretty well maxed out start to spec fireball. Run insight merc early, to a reapers merc setup with treachery and gulli. IF I find the needed parts make an infinity merc and respec to light. Goal of hitting Level 95.

For my set mid game I'd like a vmagi, 2 sk circ or shako, or NW, seraphs or rare ammy, mages, try my best to hit 105 fcr, vita as I think im skilled enough to teleport in and out of packs, or avoid them all together with a high res shield sanctuary or something.

End game I'd like to see NW, maras, hoto or fathom, Enigma, spirit monarch, cta, mages, bk, arach(tgods if I have hoto), fcr, infernostrides with an infinity merc (I'll ignore immunes) using gulli and treach.
