Hey guys! Long time D2 fan and recent lurker here after taking a break from seriously playing the game for a few years. I say 'seriously' because like many on these forums, I can't walk away from this game and will always revisit it periodically since nothing else compares :p

Anywhooo -

With the ability to add things like Ladder RWs and a larger stash via PlugY, it has really inspired me to get some characters going in SP. I have read through several of the WT threads here and some stickies, but I didn't necessarily see this answered:

How exactly are you, playing as nearly any class/build, able to handle /players 8 through an entire WT??

Is it common to get stuck? Are you chugging potions? Are you re-running areas to get the equipment to be able to power through? I am very familiar with playing at the different P1-8 settings and I have noticed (and gotten frustrated) at sometimes just how difficult certain situations can be. Especially when things like immunities and super mob packs come into play. Ultimately I will run into this situations, get frustrated, and end up copping out and adjusting the player settings (I know, I'm a wuss).

So - I'd love to know some insider tips on how I maybe adjust my playing or mindset to stop being so n00b. Tell me how you do it! Flaming due to my shear level of weakness is welcomed.

as long as you are patient and max your res most builds are possible

- spirit, ancients pledge, lore on norm
- shop at anya nm/hell to fill out res you lack

if your defense is okay it's just a matter of time

1. Pick something easy for your first time on a p8 walk. Hdonk, Sorc, etc. You learn tricks on how to dodge monsters, what rws to make, etc, but mostly you just learn patience. Sometimes killing a zombie will take 30 seconds and all your mana. That's fine, you'll just go buy more pots.
2. You will grind. You will grind for experience, items, runes, bases, etc. Mostly normal you don't bother until you rerun baal a few times for levels, then at the beginning of NM and NM mephisto there is a lot of running for gear.
3. A lot of people do reruns on lower P than progression. There's debate about whether that's "legit" but nobody minds as long as you're upfront about it in your rules.
4. Look at old walks, see their tricks. Lawbringer is a hell of a trick for any physical character dealing with the rampaging physical immunes in hell. Lifetap wands are shoppable - find them if you need them. Trick out your merc, they can literally clear the game if you support them (a key to many of these wonky builds)

5. Pick something you'll have fun with, and set goals for yourself. Otherwise the grindfest is real.

Don't do this if you want the real experience.

Game was designed for P1. If you want higher challenge than default, you can use Px command and you will be rewarded with more loot and XP. But changing player settings has nothing to do with legitness, only elitists say P8 is mandatory.

Would be nice to know a specific class for better tips. Leveling is important and you will have to farm sometimes. Andy/meph nm and even the same at hell are common spots to farm. You can have a look at crafting recipes and lower runewords to make the most out of your character

If your gonna post a WT on a forum of a game thats almost 20 years old and want it to be entertaining... I would hope it would be on the hardest difficultly possible though... HC players 8

But at the end of the day do what you want.. you're the one playing it, if people dont like what your doing they dont have to read/look at your post

Don't play to please the autistic elitists from this subforum
Play to have fun

If you're not having fun anymore grinding at a slow pace through p8, nobody is going to smite you for lowering the player count. Anyone who whines about how you play single player isn't worth talking to anyway.

To answer your original question, it isn't really hard. It just takes longer. Be patient and don't take on more enemies at once than you can safely kill. Look at your early level runewords so you'll know your priorities. Leaf, stealth, spirit, insight, white, ancients pledge
