I know part of it is based on how you approach the rack as well.
First step:
keep rerolling the map, until you got one, where an armor rack is close to the wp. There is 1 at each of the bigger huts at the campfire, and there is 1 in this large square building.
second step:
If you find such a map, you have to save and exit and do a couple of runs of that rack, by taking the direct path from the wp to the rack. you do a couple of runs, because monsters near the rack change the item that drops and as you said, angle of approach also has an impact, so you could change that also a bit.
If you drop the item you want, start farming, if not, repeat with the first step.
i rerolled LK for a couple of hours until i got the SR rack close to the wp.
