This is just a tidbit for anyone that chooses the wrong difficulty by accident:
If you choose the wrong difficulty and you had favorable maps, do not Save and Exit. Leave the game open but paused. Then open Task Manager (Ctrl Alt Del) and close Diablo 2 in the processes (game.exe or something similar). This does not force an internal save within the game so you can open it back up and play on the correct difficulty with your maps.
