I tried it last night. He killed NM eldrich group by himself and never died. It was p1 tho, just now tried same thing on P8 and it didnt work. So I guess I cant do that..

Hobbes can beat the game just using summon grizzly as a tank and merc as dps. You can do the same with clay golem as tank/merc dps, plus you get the added benefit of all the curses and the CG slow.

Well I assume Subban was talking about how IM and BG used to work together.
In 1.04-1.09 BG also leeched back life from the damage that Iron Maiden inflicted when he was hit, practically turning him into an invincible tank.

In 1.00-1.03 it was even worse, when the life leech was based on the current life of the attacker. (Which also applied to ranged attackers if they were standing next to the Golem.)
So it was actually beneficial to increase the player number in the game, because it would make the Golem leech a lot more. Up to many thousands of life per hit.
In some cases the leech could become so high that it caused an overflow, so in stead of leeching 90,000 life, you would "leech" -90,000 life.
You wouldn't die, but any damage would instakill you. If you kept leeching these big negative numbers, eventually the game would crash because the allocated memory space would be exceeded. Good shit.

Anyway, the BG + IM has no synergy now, and I don't think anyone ever uses either of them, because there are better alternatives. -_-

Options:
-Clay Golem+ Merc (becomes tanky with good gear if Clay Golem is tanky)+ Curses, and the rest is free bonus- Poison Dagger;
-Blood Golem, Iron Golem and Fire Golem are all much weaker than Clay Golem, and need some finer type of build. We need for each of them 2 sources for crowd control (Mercs Holy Freeze Aura and Curses)+ Poison Dagger;

For Fire Golem Lower Resist is a must, but we dont have other source of crowd control besides Mercs Holy Freeze Aura, while using Lower Resist (with Poison Dagger). So, all the 3 other types of Golems are much worse than Clay Golem.
In all these cases Poison Dagger can be use safely due to those sources of crowd control (+ Bone Armor and some more, depending on build).

Also, any other class can use Clay Golem, by using 'Stone' runeword, but in each case the Clay Golem must be made tanky by different sources of each class (and by Merc again), because we don't have Golem Mastery and Summon Resist (and even Blood Golem) to make him tanky.

Big Likes from me to all contributors to this nice thread.

I will try to make also 2 chars, one with tanky Clay Golem and one with tanky Fire Golem (not as wts yet), and i will use the ideas from this post of mine.

From my experience, the fire golem has done his part up to NM Andy/Rad. He is killing as fast as the merc and not dieing on p8 until it comes to bosses or 2+ of unique monsters in 1 pack.
I will most likely stay with fire Golem until it gets to hard for him. Just so I dont have to waste a 2nd respec yet.
As of current skills i have 20 in fire Golem, 20 in iron Golem (defense+ a test try of IG with bonesnap), couple into resis, couple in mastery. Down to Lifetap curse and decrep curse skills. Guessing my next couple skills will go to mastery.

Once I restat, I will go to tanky clay Golem and have to find my merc some good gear from mephy and shank/eldrich (if I can get past D again)
