Well, taking into account that you are going to depend more or less on the merc, I couldn't think of any better upgrade you could get towards hell / end nm mate. Any other "unique" item or shit mighjt nnot help you as much as a 300% ed forty on ur merc.. boosting his def, the armor and ur bo, gonna make him invincible and huge dmg once u find good weapon ;-P

Yeah fort is the best choice, but need a very good armor first, willnt waste that Lo in a normal 4os! :)
