If you ctrl+alt+del and close the game that way it wont overwrite your map saves.

This is huge. Does it matter how long you are in the nm game for before doing it? I really want to use my nm socket quest but I have truly once-in-a-lifetime Hell Meph, Baal, AT and LK maps all at once that I cannot bring myself to reset.

ergh, you can't use it like that. If you go nm, socket your item, and ctrl+alt+del, you lose everything you did since entering the game, so your item will be un-socketed when you re-enter the game in hell, with your maps intact

You need to game along with shared stash-saved character +exit method mentsiond before
