Not to sound like a broken record, but just to avoid the politics I'll start out by saying that I don't hold my views on the subject to anyone else, each person does their own thing and the diversity is great.
But yeah, by asking that question I feel like you may have misinterpreted what I meant by "legit". I don't mean "legit" as in a challenge or anything like that... I just meant legit as in no add-ons, playing the game 100% exactly as the developers intended, out of the box. It always did bug me a little bit to use LRW in SP because at the end of the day I had to make changes to my D2 folders that the developers did not intend. It felt a bit like cheating which is probably why I didn't use many on my first 3 WTs.
The thing I find paradoxical and maybe a little sad about LRW is that they allow for much more diversity in builds, but at the same time promote cookie-cutter builds by not having enough balance among them. 90% of melee-based characters are going to opt for Grief, effectively squashing creativity for half of all builds. Grief is really my main quarrel there though.
So anyways to answer your question directly, in that scenario imo the vanilla player would be playing in a more legit manner, but the LRW player would have a much greater challenge.
Oh and PS, if there were P8 online, I'd still play SP for 0 ping ^_^
Totally agree. I feel the same way it just doesn’t feel quite right when adding anything to the game in general. Even though it does make it more fun with being able to diversify builds like you said. I’ve never done a P8 wt without lrw, I did a few with plugy back in the day but it just seems to “easy” anymore. Mainly the stash. Never used anything else. Back when I did that race to 95 all we could use was lrw but without plugy it renewed an excitement in me to play the game again.
I will definitely have to try a complete vanilla to see how I like it. Not sure what character to roll with though. But again I agree with you here and I also would choose SP over bnet
