What to say. Once i got Death it was very smooth. Even the glacial spike proc (on striking, not attack, which is important) is nice defensive layer. Worst part was A1 hell until i got decent stuff to grind Pits comfortably. Also decre is the key (obviously). And gloom is king of safety, that's a hill i die on, especially against mobs shoting out screen like souls/sirens and hard to see ones like the porcupines or how the little rats are called.
