Yes, you don’t want a normal poleaxe.

Thresher/CA/GT would all work great.

This. If your weapon rack drops poleaxes just leave em. I recommend pits for a base

No! Besides, as Pika said, Pits with 0 MF is the best way to hunt for bases.
