Sadly yes.
You have to play the patch they push on you.

I wish we could select on the B.Net GUI the version of the game we want to play on single player.

Good thing on LOD was that we could always download the patch we wanted to play and it would update when we wanted to go online... But with D2R you can't launch the game without first updating it.
