There's always an empty slot under your torch. Some large charms are better than 2 small charms (example : 5/34 vs 2 x 2/17 for full mana ES-sorceress).

Rare (yellow) items have very high potential. Odds for finding good ones are near zero, however.
Any kind of rare item may have some use. Some examples :
2skill/20ias/15str/15dext/... gloves for javazons
30str/60life/res/24fhr belts
30/10/9/40/40/40 boots
450ed/2soc/40ias/etheral/... weapons
450ed/2soc/20ias/Amplify bows
etc
In my eyes, they are only 'collector' items, since you will never plan to build a char around those kind of items...
