Dont play softcore. Play hc, p8 for progressing, whatever players settings for rerun to make it easier for the first run.
Also, dont set any hard rules, p8 hc hell is very hard by itself.
Just choose a class + build and play it :)

I did my first WT on softcore as well. I have to tell you that it is not that interesting for most of the guys here if its softcore but I recommend it! Start with softcore to get the trick, and 2nd or 3rd time hardcore. Play /players 8 tho. Here are some builds that, personally, I would like to see:
Strafer
Jump, Singer Barb
Curse Necro
Passiv and Magic zon
Melee sorc
Melee Necro
Summon Druid.
That is the most interesting to me right now, but start with w/e you can do best! I did not, and now... Total fail lol.

Up to you with SC/HC, whichever you feel comfortable with. As Pixel says, I think a lotta people prefer following HC walks, as there is obviously much more at stake.

Which do you usually go for on ladder?

It’s not just preference of audience, I can almost guarantee if you make a SC char, by the time you’re lvl ~85 and you’ve died a handful of times or more you’ll realize HC is where it’s at. The impermanence and fleeting thrill of near death in HC gives you a small adrenaline rush. :D

Yeah, agreed :) As I'm discovering with my current walk. Get a real "ohhh shit shit shit" moment when that red bulb suddenly jumps down to a mere sliver!
