Here is my opinion:
I do not like the idea of re-modelling and new textures because that would mess up the whole 'picture', but if you want to scale the resolution up to 1080p it becomes inevitable otherwise the whole Blood Moor area would fit in one screen. Monster AI also needs to be improved since the 'line of sight' now is according to 800*600 (actually you can experience this feature if you are playing with higher resolution mods). Giving the fact that D2 uses a very old engine I presume that enhancing comes with more work than simply making a new game based on D2 standards.
But.
From the sales and marketing point of view: please keep in mind that 15 years have been passed, much have been changed. Most of the old players became adults which means that they are out of the 'target scope'. The new generation of gamers do not have that kind of patience and enthusiasm which is required for a stable in-game community. Everything is faster, kids will become bored faster demanding every feature instantly. This means that the 'black market' will also react faster so programmers, botters, itemshops will remain and game shall be ruined within a few weeks. Sad but true investing into D2 does not worth anymore.
someone sounds like a business major

very accurate outlook I imagine
