Arreat's obviously. I would say Guillame's is worth it if you find it first. You can't be sure whether you will find an Arreat's eventually. And even if you do, the Guillame's will go on the merc so the socket isn't a complete waste. Shako, Sormshield, Andy's Face probably also worth it. Depending on your build, Reaper's Toll might be worth it if you have the flexibility of using in either on your merc or yourself depending what you find.

If by some stroke of luck you find a ultra-rare Stormlash, Death Cleaver, Azurewrath or Astreon's, they'd probably be worth it too.

If you aren't heavy farming waiting for just the best items: Vamp Gaze, Headstriker, Butcher's Pupil.

I’d say no weapon is worth it since grief is bis and relatively easy to obtain in lower kurast hell.. I would probably just go storm shield, arreats, guilly

Depends on patience. for example if you *want* Arreats and you find shako, just wait it out. Same with Guillaumes (even thou that should be bis).

this. i socketed my arreats and ended up throwing it away when i realized how much better guli is.
wasted a socket on my barbs armor at some point, cuz iwas eventually able to make a RW.
used my last one on guli, and wished i had the other two for my merc's reaper n helm.

how could I have phrased the question differently to communicate that it was about a 'barb playthrough" and not about a character where you just sit there until you farm all the best gear?

You don't want to waste your sockets on mid tier items, you use it you lose it. Very very very few mid tier items are worth the socket- gulimans is one of them

I wouldn’t bother wasting a socket on a non end game item. You will regret it later.

Two Gulimennens and Reapers. Literally zero other options come to mind
