I desperately need a Witchwild String for my Hunter Druid (Bow/Summoner). 200 runs at Nightmare Andy, 200 at Nightmare Meph, no dice so far.

This - but by the looks of it, NM Mephisto is your best option.

I believe that bows are more likely to drop off of archer packs (some exceptions included) so you could try finding an archer rich area with lots of champs. That said, the answer is usually pits and nm pits probably has a low drop chance and hell pits would really wreck your day soooo, good luck.

20 hours of straight farming is nothing for single player?

nope. many people put hundreds of hours in. i did 10k LK runs to get enigma on my hammerdin. took a few months.
