I notice it says staff for the Ribcracker. Would I get a bonus if I put points into Mace Mastery, or are barbs just SOL on the Ribcracker?

yes you do get a bonus.

i guess it could work, i had a summon necro 4 ladders ago soloing hell andy/act 1 with a noneth/nonupped ribcracker

Staff is mace class. eth up'd ribby sounds like a pretty great weapon for a barb, really.
