Looking for a new game and PoE always looked like a cool, more complicated version of Diablo 2. I was checking out PoE 2, but on their website I see Metamorph and Conquerors. Are these expansions to the regular PoE?

Is now a good time to start playing whichever is current to prepare for PoE2 release? I think I saw that the latest patch/expansion was released a few weeks ago, but I'm a little confused.

POE2 (4.0) won't be for another year - if not more from the time of this edit.

Metamorph is the current league.

Conquerors of the Atlas is the current Expansion we're in.

poe2 is 4.0? think theyre gonna be at 1.0 again after some beta version and that

PoE 2 is PoE 1 4.0.

OT, now is pretty much the perfect time to start with the new challenge league and 3.9 huge xpac that altered the endgame and quite a few new things added too.

I'd say go for it and enjoy the ride, this game is gg.
