so i just started playing this game for first time ever recently and i used my elder orb on desert springs map.
i have 20 normal maps that i had already can i just use them on it and it applies the tier 16 automatically or do i have to upgrade the maps or craft the elder mod onto it in the map device?
first time ever doing this.

but no, normal maps remain normal maps. They have to drop "elder" and they will be tier 16

no way to 'upgrade' or turn the normal ones into elder maps.

ahhh this is what i was thinking would be the case since the shaped ones were like that but couldnt find any info about it myself.
how do i get them to spawn now? ( run tier 16 maps?) or what is the name of them once orbed so i can buy them?

you can find them in the wild anywhere a t16 would drop. Running other t16 maps are your best bet of course. You can also uncomplete guardian maps youve completed on your atlas to increase the odds any given t16 that can drop will drop as your shaped choice. If you uncomplete all 4 guardians the potential pool of t16 is reduced to just the shaped map you chose and you will get only that one 100% of the time - which can be useful for sustaining runs.

buying one, you just type shaped "xxxx" into poe.trade, or search the normal name but filter all maps by a minimum tier of 16.

it would be called "Elder Desert Spring" and be tier 16
and yeah just like any other tier 16 the higher the maps you run the better chance of getting them, and there are ways to manipulate your atlas to increase chances as well as mentioned.
