FOMO isn't an internet buzzword its an industry term used by developers who hire teams of psychologists to use any and all advantages they can to make an addictive product. Casinos do the same thing, now why would a game developer use the same shady tactics a casino uses to keep people inside and playing longer?
could it be that a free to play game wants its users online as long as they can because the longer they play the more money they spend? Maybe there's an overlap of poor decision making between those that get addicted to video games and those that fall into gambling addiction? Imagine if there was an mtx that combined both. A "loot box" if you will
