GGG isn't just one of the many, they were one of the first. GGG uses predatory tactics where they don't need to, it doesn't matter how much you love the game if you can't see this you are pretty slow. I've spent thousands on this game and I don't regret it because I've also played 10k+ hours.
- (Supporter packs) - these used to be promoted in a way that you were helping a "small indie company" survive. They don't need "support" when they are owned by the biggest gaming company on the planet.
But more importantly they are a timed mtx that you lose access to that triggers FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)- (Loot Boxes) - These are gambling, and it doesn't matter whether or not you are winning money or gaining player power they aimed at fostering addictions in children and adults with little to no willpower. You can say it is the buyers fault and thats fine, most people including ggg knows this is targeting weak minded individuals which is why governments are finally stepping in across the globe.
- (battle pass) - This is a lesser offense but it doubles down when you have to earn the rewards and the pass itself goes away after x time. Regardless of what other companies are doing again this is FOMO (fear of missing out) and a predatory tactic. It's also a slap in the face to their core audience when dev time is spent making alt arts and alt effects for paid items when the base game items look like mud. You used to get these alt arts from racing.. you know.. effort and playing..
- (stash tabs) - This is pay to win whether you'd like to admit it or not, when you're doing anything in the game you are interacting with the inventory tetris ggg themselves have created. Any time in your hideout is time that isn't spent progressing your character. You are buying efficiency from a company that makes their game less efficient by adding more and more useless junk every league. I own one of every tab and multiple of others and its a joke how people can even argue against this just because you aren't buying levels. Over the course of a league you're buying hours/days of gametime just from inventory management.
- (Gameplay loops) - As I said ggg isn't one of the many they were one of the FIRST companies to employ these kinds of methods, Chris has given speeches at developer workshops on how to get your players playing for as much time as possible so they can spend as much money as possible. They are fostering addictive gameplay to put their hooks into you as they then employ manipulative tactics to take advantage of addictive spending.
