If my opinion matters any (which i guess it shouldn't - but atleast i am all about ARPGS and played d2 since 2002~ and d3 since release) path of exile beats diablo 3 for me on ALL levels except a very select few.
The only things I can think of is that the action/mobslaying is more polished in d3. Most likely due the producers past history in Console games (think about it, the battles in d3 are a little like consolish~) and the obvious advantage of being a Multi billion dollar company. The gameplay is really smooth and sometimes a little challenging. This is my experience from the Witch doctor anyhow which i played 90-95% of my 750~h
And then there is the physics engine, the response when u make actions and the overall stability.
But from my perspecitve these are good things that you can wish for after the basic requirements for an ARPG are close to perfected.
Im talking about the character progression, the importance of planning your build (poe took a great direction with their passive point tree, where as d3 doesn't even have skill progression worth mentioning.
Im also talking about the itemization - I been over this so many times I cant be arsed anymore but to most people it's obvious that PoE has a deep item system that takes a fat dump on diablo 3's badly thought out, dumbed down, flat out retarded itemization.
today I would rate PoE 7,5/10, with the budget, stability, more polished end game it would be a 8,5-9/10.
Diablo 3 would score like 4-5/10
take PoE philosophy and talent in the crew, slap blizzard logo and givem the same budget and call it diablo 3 - im sure d3 would've been praised as a worthy sequel
edit on topic of which game requires more skill... Neither requires alot, just a little experience, I could agree diablo 3 requires a little more skill. But on hardcore it's easier to stay alive on d3, u just have to have the basic skill required and reach "checkpoints" in stats on any named build i'd say. PoE there's alot more mobs that will cause you to panic for sure.
You cant get Rick Rhoa'd from off the screen in D3. The only real skill there is avoiding Bowser's lazer beams
