ITT: company bad they monetize their game with cosmetics
uhhh sorry but thats just wrong on so many levels

first of all, the whole "only cosmetics is paid for, but the game isnt p2w" is a
business model. it works by having a good PR and by maintaining the nice guy persona so people do it. chris for example is extremely good at it. my honest guess from what ive seen is that hes a clinical psychopath but whatever, not my patient so i cant diagnose him

anyways, once you maintain the "good guy" persona, you can rely on peoples narcissism to do the rest for you. either way, its a fair business model in general. but its not what ggg does

the next step in this business model is to "expand the business". now you can rely on one more thing, and its called sunken cost fallacy. once you have the people locked in by giving you money, they are more likely to defend their purchase. they will defend your actions more than non-paid users, and are generally more open to more predatory models that you will implement next. many of those people eventually become the "whales"

ofc the bigger whale someone becomes, the more you can push him around with him still defending you, as you can see for example in star citizen. anyway, while all this is morally questionable at best, its not illegal. yet
so now lets get into the illegal shit. as meanwhile said, lootboxes are extremely predatory and are basically gambling, which is why they arent allowed in many countries. for example in many places you are legally obliged to write the exact % chance of getting each piece from the box. diablo immortal solved this by a workaround that changed the legal name of the lootboxes into not lootboxes as you have to actually finish a level with it, so you have to play to get the items. thats just legalist bullshit and people generally know it. but whales are locked in already, they dont care anymore. poe also solved the legal issue with a legal copout. they are selling a box with "pieces that never repeat" and stated the chances for each piece. what they didnt state though, is that they added different colored version of the same piece, which reduced the actual chances of completing a set
one more thing meanwhile mentioned is the battle pass. basically it connects your playtime and money spent in your head, by abusing fear of missing out. so if you play a lot you will think "hmm why shouldnt i just pay a little money and get something for it? i do play a lot after all!", and if you pay a lot, you will think "hmmm, since im already paying, i might as well play more, right?". basically forces you do pay if you play, and play if you pay. EXTREMELY illegitimate and borderline disgusting
ah yes. the whole "game is not pay to win" is honestly complete bullshit

try playing without at least a premium tab (so your trading slows down to a crawl or stops completely), and currency/map/whatever tabs exist now (so you cant stash items after 10-20 maps). the quality of life for non-paid users is so horrible that there simply arent any anymore

people either pay their way in, or just leave the game completely. this also has a term for it, "coercion". its like that vax thing, you dont HAVE TO do it; but we will make your life a living hell and you wont be able to do jack shit, so you will give up eventually

tldr: i dont expect you to read this as you seem to have made up your mind. but if there are some people who find what ggg is doing at least questionable , those might actually have some good reading material here
