Meta gems only drop from the new Conquerors of the Atlas bosses (the former Exiles Zana sealed away), which might be a pretty hard and rare fight and / or a rare drop.
Seeing how you probably need to be well in endgame already before you even find a meta gem it's not that big a deal imho.
Also GGG stated they would start cranking up the difficulty of PoE, starting with the CotA Expansion as a ramp up to 4.0, meaning more health and other things, so I would suggest to wait and see before complaining.
Concerning Blights "semi success" I don't think that says much, because Legion was a huge success and people get burned out and skip the next league.
On top of that mines and summoning are niche builds pushed as the meta, which further encouraged some people to skip the league.
And of course it was a TD league which also did not help, even though I think the map encounters had nothing to do with TD (just burst everything as it spawns and collect your rewards) and the maps turned out quite nice, but were totally optional (it's not like the league was not rewarding enough if you just quick farmed the map encounters and sold the blight maps).
Plus you compete with BL3 & WoWC, both grind heavy games with a similar target audience.
Metamorph sounds ok as a league, but I think it will hardly matter because CotA is a core expansion and the endgame revamp is huge.
New Endgame bosses with rewards that are totally worth it (meta gems, new exalt orbs) both to sell them to people who cannot farm them and for self use, after years of complaints that bossing is not worth the effort.
New crafting.
All maps can now be t14-t16 at the same time which is huge for endgame variety.
And the bow / wander meta, which people have been waiting for, forever.
to me most of this is the problem, its will further the divide between those that can and those that can't
and every item that becomes 'necessary' (use this term loosely) will be be even expensive and impossible for the normal player to access - which only encourages botting and rmt.
